Police in Abuja say 70 people were arrested after a robbery around the Unity Fountain area of Maitama, with 40 suspects still in custody after screening.

The operation followed an attack in which a victim was allegedly robbed of a gold necklace and other valuables. The victim later identified two suspects among those arrested, according to the police account reported by Premium Times.

Police said the arrests were made during a raid after officers received information about people suspected to have been involved in robberies and other crimes around Maitama. Thirty of the arrested persons were released after preliminary screening, while investigators kept 40 for further questioning.

Vanguard reported that the police recovered items during the operation and said the suspects would be charged after investigation. The reports did not give a court date.
