One dead as four-storey building collapses in Enugu
One person has been confirmed dead after a four-storey building under construction collapsed at Independence Layout in Enugu.
The building, located around Ogbaru Street and Alvan Ikokwu Street, came down on Sunday while rescue work was still under way. Vanguard reported that three people had been rescued from the rubble, while officials were still checking whether anyone remained trapped.
An official involved in the operation said the final number of affected people had not been established. The official linked the collapse to suspected structural defects and said the site had earlier been sealed by the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority after an inspection.
The report said excavators were deployed at the scene as emergency responders continued work around the damaged building. The incident adds to concerns over enforcement of building-control rules in rapidly developing urban areas.
