NiDCOM defends response to Nigerians detained in India

NiDCOM has defended its handling of the case of Nigerians detained in India after campaigners demanded stronger action over their release and deportation concerns.

The dispute centres on Nigerians held at the Lampur detention centre, including a case identified in the reports as Ekene. The commission said it had been engaging the matter through official channels and pushed back against claims that it had abandoned the detainees.

Punch reported that Nigerians in India and activists had questioned the agency’s response, while Vanguard reported a public exchange involving Abike Dabiri-Erewa and Arise TV anchor Rufai Oseni over the stranded Nigerian case.

The reports did not show a final resolution for the detainees. The public disagreement instead exposed wider frustration over how quickly Nigerian authorities respond when citizens abroad face immigration detention or deportation problems.
