Gunmen abduct six Islamic scholars in Zamfara

Six Islamic scholars have been abducted by gunmen in Zamfara State after travelling to Talata Mafara for a gathering linked to former governor Abdulaziz Yari.

The victims were travelling to Talata Mafara for the gathering when they were seized at Gidan Suleiman Bature in Gonar Sarkin Forest, about three kilometres from Damri village, according to the reports that cited security officials and local accounts. The Nigerian Army said no cleric was abducted at Yari’s residence, describing that claim as false, but confirmed that some people were abducted while travelling from the Sububu forest axis in Bakura Local Government Area to Talata Mafara, and said troops were working with other security agencies to rescue them.

Premium Times reported that the state police command also confirmed the incident and said operatives had been deployed in the affected area. Daily Trust reported the victims as imams, while Punch described them as Islamic scholars.

The abduction adds to continuing security concerns in Zamfara, where armed groups have repeatedly targeted travellers, rural communities and religious figures. Officials had not announced the victims’ release at the time covered by the reports.
