Ambulances deployed for emergency medical services in Plateau State

Riyom General Hospital in Plateau State has been upgraded to a National Trauma Centre, with 15 ambulances deployed to support emergency response across the state.

The Federal Government announced the upgrade during the launch of the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System in Riyom. The new ambulances include five conventional emergency ambulance buses and 10 tricycle ambulances for rural and hard-to-reach communities.

Kachollom Daju, permanent secretary at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, represented Health Minister Muhammad Pate at the launch. She said the service would run through Plateau’s emergency medical services system, a federal tertiary-facility pathway and a rural emergency transport plan for pregnant women and newborns.

The trauma centre will operate as an outpost of the Jos University Teaching Hospital. Officials said the arrangement is meant to help emergency teams reach patients faster and move them to facilities where they can receive proper care.

Plateau Governor Caleb Mutfwang, represented by Deputy Governor Josephine Piyo, said the intervention matched the state’s plan to reduce the effect of distance, cost and transport problems on access to medical care. He said the state had earlier bought five ambulance buses and provided tricycle ambulances for Jos East and Riyom.

Mutfwang said the newly deployed ambulances would be distributed, managed and maintained properly. The government also thanked President Bola Tinubu and the health ministry for approving the Riyom trauma centre and supporting emergency medical services in the state.
