Tinubu Urges AU To Act On Xenophobic Attacks In South Africa

President Bola Tinubu has taken Nigeria’s complaint over recurring xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks in South Africa to the African Union, asking African leaders to put the issue on the agenda of the next AU Assembly session.

Tinubu’s message was delivered by Vice-President Kashim Shettima at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the AU Assembly in Luanda, Angola. The president said the attacks undermine African solidarity and require collective attention from the continent’s leaders.

The call builds on Nigeria’s earlier demand for stronger protection for its citizens in South Africa, reported here. In the latest intervention, Tinubu asked that the matter be considered at the 40th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly scheduled for January 2027.

He said South Africa has the right to enforce its immigration laws, but argued that attacks on Africans and other nationals threaten peaceful coexistence. The Nigerian position is now moving from bilateral pressure to a wider AU-level appeal for action.
