67 More Nigerian Returnees Arrive Lagos From South Africa

Sixty-seven more Nigerian returnees from South Africa have arrived in Lagos, days after another return movement linked to anti-migrant tension in South Africa.

The returnees landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport aboard a South African Airways flight at about 8.45pm on Wednesday, according to the reports. They were received by federal agencies including the National Emergency Management Agency and the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons.

The arrival follows an earlier NaijaTrend report here on the scheduled return of another group of Nigerians from South Africa. Channels TV reported that the latest batch was assisted by private individuals, while Daily Post said the movement brought the number returned with that assistance to 150 after an earlier group of 83.

Daily Post named Ikem Ume-Ezeoke and Chief Charles Mba as representatives of the private group that received the returnees. It reported that each returnee was given N50,000 as immediate support.

Channels TV said officials linked the movement to xenophobic challenges in South Africa. The report also cited recent anti-migrant violence and wider African concern over the treatment of foreigners in the country.

The latest arrival adds confirmed landing details, a 67-person batch figure and the immediate support reported after the returnees reached Lagos.
