Police officers on duty in Nigeria.

Police in Osun State have confirmed a shooting around Naira and Kobo Garage in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area, but said they had not verified reports that five people were killed.

The incident followed a dispute over control of the motor park. Reports from the area alleged that three commercial bus drivers and two passersby were killed, but the police account available on Monday stopped short of confirming any casualty figure.

Osun police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi said the command was still gathering information. Daily Post reported him as saying that police could only confirm shootings around the area at that stage, while Premium Times reported the same police position and the alleged casualty claims from local posts.

The shooting comes amid renewed tension around Osun motor parks after the state government warned against violence linked to local government and transport-union disputes.

For now, the confirmed fact is that there was a shooting at the Ikire garage. The reported deaths remain unverified by police.
