Kano Chief Judge Frees Seven Inmates On Medical Grounds

Kano State Chief Judge, Justice Dije Abdu Aboki, has ordered the release of seven inmates on medical grounds after reviewing the cases of 82 awaiting-trial persons.

The exercise took place at the Kurmawa and Goron Dutse custodial centres, according to the Nigerian Correctional Service in Kano.

The service said some inmates had spent years in custody without formal charges. The seven releases followed consideration of their health conditions and other circumstances around their continued detention.

Justice Aboki said justice should be administered fairly and without unnecessary delay.

Kano Controller of Corrections Ahmed Lakpene urged the released inmates to obey the law and avoid actions that could return them to custody. He also said jail delivery exercises help reduce overcrowding and improve access to justice.
