SERAP Asks Tinubu To Probe Alleged N6.79bn Police Funds Diversion, Missing Firearms

SERAP has asked President Bola Tinubu to order an investigation into allegations that more than N6.79bn in Nigeria Police Force funds was diverted, misapplied or left unaccounted for.

The group also wants the government to recover and account for missing firearms and ammunition allegedly flagged in the Auditor-General of the Federation’s 2022 audited report. The request was made in a letter dated August 1, 2026 and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare.

Punch and Vanguard both reported that SERAP gave the Federal Government seven days to act on its recommendations or face possible legal action. The organisation said anyone found responsible, including contractors, companies and public officials, should be prosecuted after investigation.

The allegations cited in the reports include payments for abandoned police projects, payments to allegedly unqualified contractors and security allowances that were allegedly paid to an officer rather than the named beneficiaries.

SERAP also cited audit findings that 42 firearms, including AK-47 rifles and pistols, as well as 737 rounds of live ammunition booked into the FCT Police Command armoury between 2021 and 2022, were not returned. The group said the alleged gaps could weaken public safety if not properly investigated.

The reports did not include a fresh response from the Presidency or the police to SERAP’s latest letter.
