Four suspects arrested over the killing of University of Jos graduate Ibrahim Mbaya have given police their account of how he was beaten after being accused of taking a phone.

The development follows NaijaTrend’s earlier report here on calls by the UNIJOS alumni body for justice after Mbaya’s death.

Punch reported that Emmanuel Newyear, identified by police as a prime suspect, admitted striking Mbaya with a wooden plank during interrogation by Plateau police spokesperson SP Alfred Alobo. Vanguard and Daily Trust also reported that the suspects linked the assault to an alleged missing phone.

The reports said Mbaya, a Political Science graduate awaiting NYSC mobilisation, was attacked at an off-campus apartment behind the City of David area along Ring Road in Jos North Local Government Area.

Vanguard reported that the suspects were paraded by the Plateau State Police Command in Jos. Daily Trust said the incident happened on Sunday and that a video of the assault had caused public anger because of the brutality shown.

Police had earlier announced arrests in the case. The suspects’ account is now expected to form part of the investigation into who took part in the assault and how Mbaya died.
