FIFA Clears Arthur Okonkwo for Super Eagles as Goalkeeping Battle Intensifies
FIFA has confirmed goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo’s switch from England to Nigeria, making the Wrexham shot-stopper eligible to represent the Super Eagles with immediate effect.
The change of association was officially recorded on FIFA’s platform on April 6, 2026, with Okonkwo’s national affiliation now listed as the Nigeria Football Federation.
Arsenal academy to Super Eagles
Born in Camden, London, to Nigerian parents, the 24-year-old came through Arsenal’s academy from age eight. He represented England at youth level from U-15 through U-18 between 2015 and 2019, but never earned a senior cap, which opened the door for the switch under FIFA eligibility rules.
The move came after discussions with Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle during last year’s Unity Cup in London. Administrative paperwork meant he missed the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, but the wait is now over.
Wrexham’s number one
Okonkwo has been Wrexham’s first-choice keeper in the EFL Championship following a permanent move from Arsenal. His performances have been solid, and his 1.98m frame and shot-stopping ability make him a serious option for Nigeria between the posts.
With Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye already in the mix, the competition for the Super Eagles’ number one shirt just got a lot more interesting. Three quality goalkeepers pushing each other is exactly the kind of problem Eric Chelle wants to have.
