Navy Plans New Base In Taraba To Secure Cameroon Border Waterways

The Nigerian Navy plans to establish a base in the Kashimbilla area of Taraba State to improve security along waterways close to Nigeria’s border with Cameroon.

A delegation from Naval Headquarters visited Governor Agbu Kefas in Jalingo after surveying the Kashimbilla waterway in Takum Local Government Area.

Rear Admiral Jonathan Nwunuji Mamman, Chief of Administration at Naval Headquarters, said the team was in Taraba to assess the area as part of preparations for the proposed base.

Channels TV reported that the Navy sees the Kashimbilla River as strategically important because it hosts the Kashimbilla Hydroelectric Power Project, serves areas around the airport and sits along the international boundary with Cameroon.

Kefas said a permanent naval presence would strengthen surveillance, deter criminal activity and help secure the state’s waterways. He also said the base could create opportunities to train local residents to support security operations alongside the Marine Police.

The governor thanked the Navy for expanding its presence in Taraba and said closer cooperation among security agencies was needed to handle threats in the area.
