S&P Dow Jones Places Nigeria On 2027 Frontier Market Watchlist
S&P Dow Jones Indices has placed Nigeria on its 2027 country classification watchlist for possible reclassification from a standalone market to a frontier market.
Guardian reported that the decision reflects improvements in Nigeria’s regulatory environment, transparency, enforcement and market integrity. The watchlist does not mean an immediate upgrade, but it puts the country under formal review for a possible change in classification.
Leadership reported that the Securities and Exchange Commission welcomed the development while urging policy consistency. TheCable also reported that S&P cited regulatory reforms as part of the basis for the watchlist decision.
The review comes as Nigeria’s capital market continues reforms around investor protection, market transparency, post-trade systems and operational standards.
If Nigeria eventually qualifies for frontier market classification, it could improve international visibility for the market and affect how some foreign investors assess Nigerian equities.
