Oyo Teachers Suspend Strike Triggered By School Abductions

The Oyo State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers has suspended its indefinite strike after reviewing the security situation in the state.

The decision clears the way for teachers to return to classrooms after weeks of disruption linked to school safety concerns.

The strike followed the abduction of schoolchildren in Ogbomoso, in Oriire Local Government Area, and demands for stronger protection in schools.

Premium Times reported that the action began on 1 June after gunmen abducted 39 schoolchildren and seven teachers from three schools in Oriire in May.

The suspension was announced in a statement jointly signed by the state NUT chairman, Hassan Fatai, and the union’s secretary, Olukayode Salami.

Daily Post and Punch reported that the union acted after consultations and appeals by the Oyo State Government and other stakeholders.

The union said the suspension followed a review of the prevailing security situation.
