The Senate is expected to reconvene for an emergency plenary as lawmakers return to the state police bill and wider security reforms.

Punch reported that Senate Spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu confirmed the bill would be a priority at the sitting, which was convened after lawmakers cut short their recess.

The bill seeks to amend the constitution to allow states to establish police services.

NaijaTrend earlier reported here that the Senate had summoned an emergency plenary for June 23 over the national security crisis.

Adaramodu said the Senate would consider issues of public interest, especially national security. He also said the chamber expected reports from the committee that earlier received legislative referral on the state police bill.

The development comes as governors push for more constitutional powers over security operations. Daily Post reported that governors, attorneys-general and security officials recently discussed a framework for decentralised policing and clearer roles for state police services.

No final passage had been confirmed in the verified source bodies at the time of drafting, so the story is framed around the reconvened sitting and the bill returning to the agenda.
