The Senate has summoned lawmakers to an emergency session on June 23 to deliberate on national security and other pressing issues of national importance, cutting short its planned recess.

In a notice dated June 15 and signed by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, senators were directed to reconvene in the Senate Chamber by 11 a.m. The upper legislative chamber had adjourned plenary on June 11 and was originally scheduled to resume on July 7.

“The purpose of this emergency sitting is to enable the Senate to consider matters of urgent national importance, particularly issues relating to national security and other critical concerns that require immediate legislative attention,” the notice stated.

The emergency session was convened at the instance of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The recall comes as security incidents have surged across the country, including bandit attacks and the killing of police officers in Zamfara. Multiple sources indicate the Senate is expected to debate the State Police Bill among other legislative measures aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.
