Katsina Businessman Reportedly Killed After Bandits Collected Ransom

A businessman and farmer in Katsina State, Bala Sanin Kawo, was reportedly killed after suspected bandits collected ransom from his family, according to multiple reports citing local sources.

Kawo was said to have been abducted with an employee on Thursday, June 11, while returning from his farm near Dantakari in Dandume Local Government Area.

Reports said the abductors later contacted the family and demanded money for his release. Local sources cited by Premium Times, The Guardian and The Sun put the ransom at N5 million, although Premium Times noted that the exact amount could not be independently verified.

According to the reports, the family delivered the money and was later directed to another location, where Kawo’s body was found. The employee’s status was not clearly confirmed in the available reports.

Premium Times reported that the Katsina police spokesperson, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, said he would verify the incident, but no official update had been provided at the time of filing.

The killing adds to growing concern over abductions and ransom violence in parts of Katsina State. It also came days after retired Major General Rabe Abubakar reportedly died in captivity in the state.

Because police confirmation was still pending in the reports reviewed, the incident is being treated cautiously and attributed to local and media accounts rather than presented as an official security statement.

Residents and security watchers say the case reflects the continuing danger faced by farmers, traders and travellers in rural parts of the state, where ransom abductions have repeatedly disrupted livelihoods.
