National Boundary Commission border security resilience workshop

The Federal Government, state officials and traditional institutions have renewed calls for stronger early-warning systems to improve security across Nigeria’s borders.

The push came at a one-day workshop on border security, resilience and cross-border cooperation organised by the National Boundary Commission in Abuja. The meeting brought together government officials, security stakeholders, border communities and traditional leaders.

Defence Minister Christopher Musa, represented at the event by Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole, said resilient borders must be secured, adaptive and able to withstand shocks from security threats, climate pressure and economic disruption.

NBC Director-General Adamu Adaji said Nigeria shares about 4,454 kilometres of land borders with Benin, Niger, Chad and Cameroon, in addition to about 853 kilometres of coastline. He said those realities require better coordination rather than purely reactive control measures.

The workshop focused on early-warning and early-response mechanisms, intelligence sharing, technology-supported surveillance and closer cooperation with neighbouring countries.

Officials also stressed the role of traditional rulers and local authorities, who often receive early information from border communities before formal agencies do.

Participants said threats such as smuggling, irregular migration, transnational crime and community-level insecurity make it necessary to connect border management with governance, development and local trust.

The message from the workshop was that border communities should not be treated only as security flashpoints. Officials said they must be part of the intelligence network, with local leaders helping agencies detect risks before they spread across states or into neighbouring countries.
