DHQ Launches Operation Clean Sweep III After Rabe Abubakar’s Death
The Defence Headquarters Joint Task Force North West has launched a fresh offensive in Katsina State under the name Operation Clean Sweep III, following the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar in bandits’ captivity.
The operation is being led under Operation Fansan Yamma and targets terrorist and bandit groups operating around Matazu Local Government Area and nearby communities. Channels Television, Vanguard and Daily Post all reported the launch on Monday, citing a statement from Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force North West.
According to the reports, the operation began on June 14, 2026, and is aimed at tracking those responsible for Abubakar’s abduction and death, dismantling criminal networks, and improving security across affected communities in the state.
Troops have reportedly carried out fighting patrols, intelligence-led raids, cordon-and-search operations and clearance missions across suspected hideouts within the joint operations area.
The military said early operations around Dikkawa Hills and nearby communities produced gains, with suspected hideouts, logistics bases and support structures destroyed in areas including Adua, Nasarawa and Karaduwa.
Abubakar, a retired senior military officer and former defence spokesman, had been abducted alongside his wife in Katsina. NaijaTrend earlier reported his death in captivity here.
The new offensive marks a shift from mourning and official statements to a named military response in the affected area. Security agencies also appealed to residents to provide credible information that could help troops track criminal elements and limit movement by armed groups.
