The Senate has withdrawn its immediate threat to order the arrest of former NNPC Limited chief executive Mele Kyari over questions linked to a reported N210 trillion query.

The latest development changes the tone of the inquiry without ending the matter itself. Earlier proceedings had raised the possibility of compelling Kyari’s appearance, but the Senate leadership has now stepped back from that route after concerns about procedure and the authority of the committee handling the issue.

The dispute centres on figures tied to NNPCL-related records and questions raised before lawmakers. Kyari, who led the national oil company during a period of major reforms, has remained a central figure in public debate over transparency in the petroleum sector.

For now, the most important point is that the Senate is still expected to pursue explanations on the disputed figures, but it is no longer treating arrest as the immediate next step. That distinction matters because a withdrawal of the arrest threat is not the same thing as clearing the former NNPC boss of questions raised by lawmakers.

The case also reflects wider scrutiny of Nigeria’s oil-sector accounts at a time when the government is under pressure to improve revenue, reduce leakages and show clearer public accountability in state-linked institutions.

The political weight of the case comes from the size of the figure before lawmakers and the sensitivity around NNPCL’s public accounts. Any further hearing will likely attract attention from oil-sector observers, anti-corruption advocates and Nigerians tracking how the Senate handles oversight of major revenue institutions.

Kyari’s period at NNPCL covered the transition from the old corporation to a limited-liability company structure, fuel-subsidy changes and continuing public concern over refinery performance and crude revenue. That background is why the Senate’s next steps will remain closely watched.
