Obi Queries Tinubu Over N200tn National Debt Surge, Demands Accountability
Peter Obi has demanded answers from President Bola Tinubu over a surge in Nigeria’s national debt, which he says has hit N200 trillion.
Daily Post reported that Obi made the demand while reviewing the Tinubu administration’s economic performance, noting that despite claims of increased revenue, the country’s debt stock has continued to climb.
“Revenue doubled, debt hit N200tn,” Obi said, questioning where the borrowed funds have gone and calling for greater transparency from the government.
Guardian also reported that Obi called for accountability over what he described as an alarming rise in the national debt. The report said Obi had asked the government to provide a clear breakdown of the borrowing and the projects it has funded.
The N200 trillion figure, if accurate, would mark a significant increase from the country’s debt levels at the start of the administration.
The economy remains a central issue in Nigeria’s political discourse, with opposition figures pressing the government on fiscal discipline. Obi, who ran for president in 2023 on the Labour Party ticket, has consistently demanded openness in how public funds are managed.
