Cholera Outbreak: Borno Records 274 New Suspected Cases in 24 Hours, 4,204 Total Cases

Borno State recorded 274 new suspected cholera cases within 24 hours, according to the Manager of the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre, Dr. Jacob Audu Thliza.

Dr. Thliza disclosed this while presenting the state’s Cholera Epidemiological Summary covering May 1 to June 2 during a stakeholders’ meeting in Maiduguri on Tuesday.

According to the data, a total of 4,204 suspected cholera cases have been recorded at Cholera Treatment Centres and Oral Rehydration Points across the state.

A breakdown of cases by local government area shows: Maiduguri Metropolitan Council recorded 2,404 cases; Jere, 1,214; Konduga, 275; Mafa, 184; Monguno, 90; Kaga, 18; Bama, 8; Kwaya Kusar, 8; Ngala, 2; and Magumeri, 1.

Dr. Thliza added that 39 deaths have been recorded, while 2,664 patients have been discharged. The outbreak has affected 118 settlements across 21 communities.

Speaking at the meeting, Permanent Secretary of the Borno State Ministry of Health, Dr. Shettima Maina Mohammed, said the case fatality rate had declined to below one per cent due to aggressive response in treating active cases.
