Obi Promises Kwankwaso Will Be ‘Partner, Not Spare Tyre’ in NDC Government

Presidential hopeful Peter Obi has unveiled Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 elections, making a firm pledge that if elected, the vice president under a New Dawn Coalition (NDC) government would be a genuine equal partner — not a ceremonial figure tucked away in the corner.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Abuja, Obi addressed one of the most persistent criticisms of Nigerian governance: the relegation of vice presidents to largely symbolic roles, often described colloquially as “spare tyres” — there only in case of emergency, rarely consulted on policy or governance.

A New Model of Leadership

Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate who has now joined forces with the NDC, emphasized that his administration would operate on a model of consultation, collaboration, and shared responsibility. Kwankwaso, the four-time governor of Kano State and a veteran political force in the North, would not be sidelined or silenced, Obi assured.

“Let me be very clear: Rabiu Kwankwaso is not coming into this government as a spare tyre. He is my partner. We will govern together, consult together, and take decisions together. The era of vice presidents being treated as ornaments is over. The challenges facing Nigeria are too big for one man to solve alone,” Obi declared.

The announcement represents a major step in opposition realignment ahead of the 2027 elections. The NDC, a coalition of opposition forces, aims to present a credible and unified challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which has faced growing discontent over economic hardship and insecurity.

Kwankwaso: A Formidable Force

Rabiu Kwankwaso brings significant political weight to the ticket. His political network, the Kwankwasiyya movement, commands strong grassroots support across Kano and much of the North-West. His alliance with Obi — who enjoys a passionate following among young and urban voters — could create a formidable electoral coalition.

Kwankwaso, in his remarks, echoed Obi’s collaborative tone, vowing to bring his experience in governance and grassroots mobilization to bear in building what he called “a government of national competence.”

“I am not here for a title. I am here to work. Peter knows that, and Nigerians will see it. This is a partnership built on trust and a shared vision for a new Nigeria,” Kwankwaso said.

What This Means for 2027

The Obi-Kwankwaso ticket gives the opposition a North-South balance, a blend of technocratic and grassroots appeal, and — if they can keep their coalition intact — a genuine shot at unseating the APC. The pledge to make the vice presidency a substantive role also signals a break from the political status quo, which may resonate with voters tired of performative governance.

As the 2027 race begins to take shape, all eyes will be on whether the NDC can sustain this unity and translate it into votes when it matters most.
