Otti, Abaribe Emerge as Consensus Candidates in Abia LP Primaries for 2027
The Labour Party (LP) in Abia State has produced Governor Alex Otti and Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe as consensus candidates for the 2027 general elections, following a peaceful and widely inclusive party primary process.
The development, confirmed by Premium Times, marks a significant show of unity within the Abia LP chapter, which has been widely regarded as one of the most organized opposition structures in the South-East region since Otti’s landmark victory in 2023.
Peaceful and United
Unlike the factional battles and acrimonious primaries that have characterized other parties across the country, the Abia LP primaries were remarkably smooth. Party delegates and stakeholders agreed on a consensus arrangement that saw Governor Alex Otti clinch the party’s ticket for a second term bid, while Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe secured the party’s nomination for another senatorial run.
Other candidates for state and federal legislative seats also emerged through the consensus model, sparing the party the rancor that often accompanies competitive primaries.
Speaking after the exercise, Governor Otti praised the maturity displayed by party leaders and delegates, attributing the peaceful outcome to months of behind-the-scenes negotiations and a shared commitment to the party’s growth.
“What we have witnessed today is the power of consensus-building. Our party leaders sat down, discussed our differences, and arrived at a collective decision that puts the interest of Abians and the Labour Party first. This is the spirit that will carry us to victory in 2027,” Otti said.
Abaribe’s Return
Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, a veteran opposition figure and one of the most recognizable names in Nigerian politics, expressed gratitude to party leaders for their confidence in him. Abaribe, who has served multiple terms in the Senate, is expected to bring his wealth of experience and legislative clout to bear in the campaigns ahead.
The consensus model adopted by Abia LP is seen as a strategic move to present a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2027. With Otti’s performance in office already earning the party goodwill across the state, Labour Party insiders are confident of retaining and possibly expanding their electoral footprint.
A Model for the Nation?
Political observers have noted that the Abia LP consensus approach could serve as a template for other state chapters grappling with internal divisions. As Nigeria’s political scene heats up ahead of 2027, parties that manage to keep their houses in order may have a decisive advantage at the polls.
