Delta Flight DL54 Turns Back Mid-Atlantic After 8 Hours, Hundreds of Nigerians Stranded
Hundreds of Nigerian passengers were left stranded in Atlanta after Delta Air Lines flight DL54 turned back mid-Atlantic following eight hours in the air.
The Lagos-bound flight departed Atlanta at 5:42 PM EDT on Saturday, May 9, aboard an Airbus A330-200. After flying eastbound for about three and a half hours, the crew reversed course and headed back to base.
Delta confirmed the flight was diverted due to an “operational issue” but did not specify the nature of the problem. The decision to return to Atlanta rather than divert to a European airport suggests the issue required attention at the airline’s primary maintenance facility — though Delta has not confirmed that.
The aircraft landed back in Atlanta in the early hours of Sunday morning and was immediately grounded for inspection. Delta subsequently cancelled the flight, leaving passengers without clear information about rebooking options.
Passengers left in limbo
The disruption also hit the return leg. Flight DL55, scheduled to depart Lagos for Atlanta at 11:45 AM on Sunday, was cancelled as well. As of Monday morning, passengers still had no definitive word on when service would resume.
One business class passenger told ThisDay he had travelled from Abuja specifically for the flight. “Delta was not specific on when the next flight would come,” he said. “Because of the urgent appointment I have in the US, I have to buy Air France ticket to travel.”
The airline reportedly promised to rebook passengers on the next available flight if business class seats were available — otherwise they would be downgraded to economy.
What we know about the aircraft
Flight tracking data showed the aircraft, registration N854W, had crossed a significant portion of the Atlantic before turning back. The 21-year-old Airbus remained grounded in Atlanta for maintenance review following the incident.
Delta operates the Atlanta-Lagos route as one of the few direct connections between the United States and Nigeria. The airline has not provided a timeline for resuming service on the route.
