Nigeria Opens Athletics Camp Ahead of African Championships in Accra

Nigeria’s track and field athletes are back home and straight into camp. The squad returned from the World Relays in Botswana on Wednesday and began training at the Yabatech Sports Complex on Thursday evening — just five days before the African Senior Athletics Championships kick off in Accra.

The AFN called up 51 athletes: the 24 who ran in Botswana automatically qualified, plus 27 more brought in by the federation.

Tobi Amusan — world record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles — leads the team, alongside Favour Ashe, Miracles Ezechukwu, and Patience Okon-George. Ashe was blunt about the target: gold in the 100m and relay. “Before the championship, it was ‘Ashe this, Ashe that, Ashe is finished,’ but I’ve proven my worth,” he said. “All the glory to God.”

The championships run May 12–16 at the Legon Sports Stadium in Ghana. About 1,000 athletes from roughly 50 countries are expected — Ghana’s first time hosting the event in over 40 years.
