The All Progressives Congress has held its 8th National Convention in Abuja today, with Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda and Sen. Ajibola Basiru returning as National Chairman and National Secretary respectively — retained by consensus and ratified through voice vote.

The convention, described as the party’s fourth elective gathering, brought together delegates from across Nigeria’s 36 states and the FCT to ratify ward, local government, and state-level congresses conducted earlier in the year, and formally elect a new National Working Committee for the next four years.

Yilwatda, Basiru Retain Positions

Both Yilwatda and Basiru were returned unopposed through a consensus process endorsed by the full convention. In his acceptance speech, Yilwatda struck a unifying tone.

“Our mission is clear. Together, we will build a Pan-African and Pan-Nigerian party that is stronger, transparent, inclusive, and more disciplined and united than ever,” he said. “We will deepen internal democracy, strengthen our structures, expand our reach, and empower our youth.”

Full NWC Retained

Virtually the entire outgoing NWC was returned. Key officials include: Deputy National Chairman (North) Ali Bukar Dalori; Deputy National Chairman (South) Dr. Benjamin Obi Nwoye; National Legal Adviser Murtala Aliyu Kankia; National Treasurer Uguru Mathew Ofoke; National Financial Secretary Amb. Haruna Ginsau; National Organising Secretary Muhammad Sulaiman Argungu; National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka; National Women Leader Mary Idele; and National Youth Leader Dayo Israel.

2027 Context

The convention comes at a politically charged moment. With the 2027 general elections on the horizon, the APC is consolidating its internal structures while managing pressure from multiple factions and the ongoing primary timetable. President Tinubu, who is seeking a second term, has already purchased his nomination forms. The retention of the current NWC signals that the party leadership wants continuity — and minimal disruption — heading into the election cycle.

Security was tight around the venue in Abuja, with reports of disruptions in parts of the FCT during the event.
