The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says officers arrested a Uganda-bound traveller at Lagos airport on Tuesday and recovered 87 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.15 kilogrammes.

Agency spokesperson Femi Babafemi identified the suspect as Farida Nansubuga, 34, in a statement issued on Sunday. She was intercepted during joint screening with aviation security personnel at Terminal 2 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

The agency alleged that the wraps were strapped around her pelvic region beneath her underwear. It said officers moved her to a private room for a further search after the initial screening.

According to the agency’s account of her interview, Nansubuga said she arrived in Nigeria on 29 October with a church delegation and stayed behind to collect the consignment for a friend in Uganda.

The same statement reported another seizure at the airport on Friday: 750,000 tapentadol tablets in a shipment from India declared as paracetamol. The agency valued the consignment at N900 million.

It said officers also found 32 parcels of cannabis weighing 16.15 kilogrammes on Wednesday inside two wooden sofas shipped from Houston, United States. A freight agent who came forward to clear the cargo was taken into custody, and a man who later came to collect the package was arrested on Friday.

The statement did not give a court date for Nansubuga.
