Lagos police have detained an officer after a shooting during an operation in Ajegunle on Thursday killed a girl and left another injured, the command said.
Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi said in a statement on Saturday that Assistant Superintendent of Police Omotayo Olajide had been disarmed and detained following the incident in the Nosamu area.
The second girl is receiving medical treatment and is in stable condition, according to the command.
Adebisi said officers had responded to a distress call about a clash between two groups, Nosamu Boys and Alayabiagba Boys, allegedly fighting over toll collection. She said Olajide discharged his firearm during the operation and a bullet struck the girls.
Both were taken to Ajeromi General Hospital. One was subsequently transferred to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja, where she died, the police said.
The State Criminal Investigation Department has taken over the case. Commissioner of Police Tijani Fatai said the investigation would establish the circumstances of the shooting and determine the appropriate legal and disciplinary action.
