Police have arrested a 27-year-old man after an attack on Peter Obi’s convoy in Calabar, Cross River State, on Wednesday.

The Cross River State Police Command said in a statement that suspected attackers, reportedly armed with machetes and sticks, attacked vehicles near Watt Market Roundabout at about 2.20pm.

Some vehicle windscreens were smashed, but the command said it had not established the number of vehicles damaged. It said normal activity had resumed in the area.

Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, was returning from the palace of the Obong of Calabar to the Metropolitan Hotel, venue of a presidential town hall meeting, according to police.

The command said officers intervened and arrested one suspect while others fled. The suspect was taken to state police headquarters by the Violent Crime Response Unit.

Police cautioned that the arrest was not a finding of guilt and that the suspect remained entitled to the presumption of innocence pending investigation and any court proceedings.

Commissioner of Police Ajo Geoffrey Ordue ordered an investigation to establish what happened and identify and arrest other people involved.
