The National Assembly’s clerk says his office has verified approvals from 28 state legislatures for the constitutional amendment on state police and is preparing to send it for presidential assent.
Clerk to the National Assembly Kamoru Ogunlana announced the completed verification in a Tuesday statement reported by Punch and Channels Television.
The verified total exceeds the 24 state approvals required under Section 9 of the Constitution. Ogunlana said administrative processes were under way to facilitate transmission to President Bola Tinubu.
His office checked the reports and accompanying votes and proceedings to establish their authenticity and confirm the decisions of the state assemblies, he said.
The clerk’s total differs from an earlier announcement of at least 30 approvals by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele. Ogunlana’s statement did not explain that difference.
The amendment was sent to the 36 state assemblies on 16 September, with a request for responses within 30 days. Ogunlana said his office would continue accepting reports until the bill was transmitted for assent.
The statement did not announce that Tinubu had received or signed the amendment. Ogunlana said his office would provide further updates.
