The military says troops repelled an Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) attack in Kukawa, Borno State, on Saturday, killing senior figures in the group.

Captain Mohammed Goni, acting media information officer for Operation Hadin Kai, gave the account in a statement reported on Sunday.

He said ground troops, supported by aircraft from the operation’s air component, fought off the attack on their positions and recovered weapons, ammunition and communications equipment.

Those identified as killed included Abu Hajara, whom the account described as a member of ISWAP’s Shura Council, and commander Abul Walid. The account also reported two other senior fighters killed.

Daily Post carried a separate account from security analyst Zagazola Makama naming Hajara and Walid in the same Kukawa engagement.

The attack is separate from the earlier fighting at Buni Yadi in Yobe State. The identities and casualty assessment in Kukawa remain the military’s account; neither report establishes a complete toll.
