The Nigerian Navy says an assessment raised the reported death toll from its 28 October Lake Chad operation from eight to 28 suspected fighters, with six more reported killed in a separate strike.

Navy spokesperson Captain Abiodun Folorunsho gave the figures in a statement on Saturday, describing operations by naval marines and the army’s 403 Amphibious Brigade under Operation Hadin Kai.

The revised figure replaces the preliminary eight reported killed in the earlier maritime operation; it is not an additional 28 deaths on top of that count.

Folorunsho said the second operation targeted a suspected Boko Haram enclave at Dumba on Friday after intelligence and surveillance missions.

The navy’s combined reported toll for the two operations is 34.

The military had included Wednesday’s maritime operation in its earlier report on separate air and ground engagements in Borno.

Folorunsho said the figures remained subject to further verification as operational assessments continued.
