Police have arrested 11 suspects in connection with the alleged attack on African Action Congress (AAC) presidential aspirant Omoyele Sowore and others at a restaurant in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Ekiti State Police Command spokesperson Abutu Sunday said in a statement on Saturday that Rapid Response Squad officers arrested them in the Atikankan area at about 10pm on Friday after a tip-off.

The command said Sowore and the other victims had received treatment and been discharged from hospital. The suspects remained in custody while officers investigated their possible involvement.

Police said items recovered included two walkie-talkies, 13 mobile phones and eight international passports. The statement did not establish what role each suspect allegedly played in the attack.

The arrests follow a dispute over the police account of the restaurant incident. The command initially described an altercation, while Sowore said he and his associates had suffered a coordinated attack.

Sowore said in a post on X on Saturday that the arrests showed the incident was a violent attack, not an ordinary altercation. He called for the people who planned, financed and coordinated it to be identified, and asked police and the Department of State Services to preserve and release CCTV footage from the scene.

Police said the investigation would establish the suspects’ individual roles and identify other people involved.
