Nigeria and Russia aim to sign a new air services agreement in April 2027, after agreeing on six months of negotiations to replace their 1967 pact, the aviation ministry said.
The plan was announced in a statement issued on Friday by Tunde Moshood, special adviser on media and communications to Aviation and Aerospace Development Minister Festus Keyamo.
The proposed agreement would update the framework governing air transport between the two countries. The ministry said each side had formed a negotiating team to begin work immediately.
Keyamo led the Nigerian delegation in talks with Russian State Secretary and Deputy Transport Minister Dmitry Zverev on the sidelines of the Third Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow, according to the statement.
The ministry said the delegations also discussed other areas of aviation cooperation. It did not announce any new flight service as an outcome of the meeting.
The teams are expected to conclude negotiations before the planned signing in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Proposed routes, designated airlines and flight frequencies were not specified in the announcement.
