At least 30 state Houses of Assembly have now approved the constitutional amendment for state policing, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele said on Wednesday, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio confirming the same count.
Bamidele said at least 30 assemblies had backed the amendment and that he expected the bill to reach President Bola Tinubu for assent in December, as he told reporters in Abuja. Bauchi’s assembly voted for the amendment on Wednesday, with Kano’s following a day earlier, Punch reported.
The count has climbed quickly since the Presidential Working Group said 24 assemblies had approved the amendment last Thursday, clearing the two-thirds threshold. Ondo approved it on Sunday and Kano on Monday.
Under Section 9 of the Constitution, the amendment needed the backing of at least 24 of the 36 assemblies. The National Assembly must now confirm the count, pass a resolution and send the bill to Tinubu, who has said the amendment sets up the framework for dual policing. No state can start a police service until a separate National Policing Bill sets the rules.
