The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says about 10 electricity towers have been vandalised within four to five months along transmission corridors in the north.
The company’s Kano Regional General Manager, M.K. Bello, gave the figure during a sensitisation programme in Paki, Ikara Local Government Area of Kaduna State, on Wednesday.
Bello said damage to the towers could disrupt electricity supply and divert money from grid expansion to replacement work.
He identified excavation, construction and pits dug close to transmission infrastructure as threats that could weaken the structures.
Bello said more than 30 suspected vandals had been arrested with help from residents, traditional rulers, police and other security agencies. He said about five related cases were before the courts.
He urged communities to report suspected vandalism and encroachment rather than carry out activities that could endanger the towers.
District Head of Paki Ja’afaru Paki said traditional leaders monitored public assets and would continue supporting efforts to protect electricity infrastructure.
Bello did not give a timetable or a total cost for replacing the damaged towers in the reports.
