Bandits shot a resident in the leg and stole 28 cattle from a community near Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, on Sunday night, police have confirmed.
The attack happened at about 9pm on 25 October in Gidan Sarki, also identified as Gidan Asarki, behind the university’s Jummat Mosque. The affected settlement is outside the institution’s main campus.
Sokoto police spokesperson Ahmed Rufai confirmed that one person was shot and 28 cattle were taken. A senior police officer told Daily Trust that the wounded man, Malam Shehu Muhammad, was responding to treatment and that the cattle belonged to him and his son, Mustapha Shehu.
The officer said the divisional police officer in Wamakko Local Government Area had been directed to mobilise personnel to the community after police received information about the raid.
Residents said the gunmen threatened people and demanded that students living in the community be brought out. The university was on holiday, although Daily Trust reported that some newly admitted students were around for registration.
University spokesperson Isma’il Muhammad Yauri declined to comment to Daily Trust, saying the institution was not involved in the incident.
Punch reported that no deaths or abductions had been confirmed when it filed its account.
