The FBI says an operation targeting international cybercrime networks has led to nine arrests in Nigeria and the seizure of 53 electronic devices.

FBI Director Kash Patel also reported the identification of $11 million in potentially freezable funds across multiple countries. He did not describe that sum as money already seized or recovered.

Patel announced the results as part of Operation Blackout, a campaign against networks accused of defrauding Americans through scam centres operating across national borders.

Patel thanked Nigerian law-enforcement agencies and partners in London for their cooperation. Neither report identified the Nigerian agency involved, the suspects or the locations of the arrests.

The statement did not give the date on which the arrests took place. The figures are the FBI director’s account of the operation; they do not establish that the arrested suspects have been convicted.

Patel said the FBI would continue pursuing people involved in cross-border cybercrime targeting Americans.
