A mother and her child have died after two container-laden trucks overturned at Mile 2, near Freeman Market on the inward Apapa route in Lagos.

The victims were trapped beneath the trucks and their containers, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority. Daily Post reported that the crash happened over the weekend.

LASTMA’s public affairs director, Adebayo Taofiq, said rescue personnel secured the affected road and diverted motorists through an adjoining service lane while recovery work took place.

A crane and a heavy-duty tow vehicle were deployed to remove the trucks and containers. Police officers provided security during the operation, and the victims’ remains were taken to the police mortuary in Yaba.

The cause of the crash has not been established. LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki called for an investigation into the circumstances, including whether mechanical defects, overloading, poorly distributed cargo or driver negligence contributed.

Bakare-Oki also urged truck operators to inspect their vehicles, secure their loads properly and comply with road safety requirements.
