Nigeria are scheduled to open their bid for a place at the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup against The Gambia in Abuja on Tuesday, October 20.
The Yellow Greens will play at the Nigeria Cricket Federation’s Oval 2 in the six-team Africa Sub-Regional Qualifier C. Two teams will advance to the Africa Regional Final in 2027, rather than qualify directly for the World Cup.
Lesotho, Mozambique, Uganda and Zambia complete the field. The teams will meet in a single round-robin competition comprising 15 matches across NCF Oval 1 and Oval 2.
Mangongo calls for composure
Head coach Stephen Mangongo said his players had completed their preparations and needed to put their training into practice.
“Calm before the storm. That’s all we need. We’ve done all the training. We are ready to go,” Mangongo told PUNCH.
The Zimbabwean, appointed Nigeria’s head coach and high-performance manager in May, is seeking one of the two places available at the next stage.
Nigeria’s fixtures and how to watch
After The Gambia, Nigeria are scheduled to face Zambia on Wednesday, October 21, Mozambique on Friday, October 23, Lesotho on Saturday, October 24, and Uganda on Sunday, October 25, according to the ICC fixture list.
The ICC says all matches will be streamed live and free globally on ICC.tv, with Fancode carrying coverage in India. Scores and updates will also be available on the ICC website.
Chima Akachukwu is listed as Nigeria’s captain. Tanzania, Ghana, Rwanda and Kenya have already reached the 2027 Regional Final through the first two African sub-regional qualifiers.
