Two people suffered severe burns after a diesel tanker fell from Otedola Bridge and caught fire beneath it on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority said.
LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq said emergency responders rescued the victims and LASEMA’s Rescue Unit took them to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre at Toll Gate for treatment.
The fire caused traffic congestion around the bridge as motorists diverted from the affected section of the expressway.
Punch reported that LASEMA received a distress alert at about 4:24pm and dispatched its Tiger team.
Firefighters from the Alausa and Ikeja stations responded to the blaze. Vanguard reported that damping-down operations were continuing at 5pm to deal with remaining hotspots and prevent the fire from reigniting.
The Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency and police from the Alausa division also took part in the response, according to LASTMA.
The cause of the tanker’s fall had not been established in Vanguard’s report. LASTMA urged motorists to approach the area cautiously and follow traffic officers’ directions while emergency operations continued.
