At least five people died when a diesel tanker overturned and crushed a commercial car on the Iwo Road–Ojoo Expressway in Ibadan on Saturday, October 17. The Oyo State Fire Service said 10 people were rescued alive.
The crash happened around 10am at Aduloju Bus Stop, opposite Dominion City. A Nissan Micra carrying passengers was among the vehicles hit.
Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority General Manager Adeoye Ayoade told Punch that the tanker lost its brakes and its tank rolled onto the Micra. He said the five people inside, two men including the driver and three women, died.
Ayoade said traffic had built up after a trailer carrying motor spare parts broke down around Arilogu at about 5am. He put the number of vehicles involved at about six.
Fire service chairman Maroof Akinwande, in a statement reported by Daily Post, said the tanker was carrying 45,000 litres of diesel. He said it overturned, struck the Micra and collided with three other vehicles. The agency also attributed the crash to brake failure.
Akinwande said the five bodies were handed over to police officers from Kajorepo Divisional Police Headquarters.
Police spokesperson Olayinka Ayanlade confirmed the crash and said patrol teams were sent to secure the scene and rescue those involved.
Ayoade said the bodies were taken to Adeoyo Hospital Mortuary. The damaged vehicles were towed to a police station, the obstruction was cleared and traffic was restored.
