The Rivers State Police Command has queried and relieved two officers of their duties pending an investigation into allegations that suspected cultists renovated the Abuloma Police Outpost in Port Harcourt.
Those affected are the divisional police officer in charge of Abuloma Division and the divisional officer overseeing the outpost. The command said the action followed a circulating video alleging that the group visited the facility on Thursday, October 15, to celebrate the renovation.
Police spokesperson Blessing Agabe announced the action in a statement on Friday. She said Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju had ordered an investigation into the circumstances of the project and the truth of the allegations.
The inquiry will establish who financed or facilitated the renovation, their identities and backgrounds, and which officers authorised or approved the work. It will also examine whether the required procedures were followed and whether any personnel breached professional standards.
The command warned that police facilities must not be used to give suspected criminal groups public recognition or legitimacy.
The police said legitimate community support for improving facilities was permitted under Section 26(1)(d) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020, which provides for gifts and contributions to the Police General Fund. Such assistance must not compromise police independence or security, the command said.
“No donation or assistance confers immunity from investigation or prosecution,” the statement said.
The command said disciplinary and legal action would follow against anyone found culpable after the investigation.
