The Independent National Electoral Commission has inaugurated a logistics committee to plan the movement of sensitive and non-sensitive materials for the 2027 general elections.
Retired Rear Admiral Jamila Abubakar-Sadiq, a national electoral commissioner responsible for security matters, chairs the committee. Its work covers the storage, distribution, deployment and retrieval of election materials.
Speaking at the inauguration at INEC headquarters in Abuja, the commission’s chairman said early planning was needed to move materials across the country’s varied terrain by road, air and water, Daily Trust reported.
The committee is to assess warehouses, vehicles, airports, seaports and other transport facilities, identify operational gaps and plan around transport bottlenecks, shortages and security threats. Its work is expected to involve security agencies, military and paramilitary institutions and transport organisations.
Abubakar-Sadiq said the committee would draw on lessons from previous elections and identify weaknesses in the deployment of materials. Its responsibilities include airlift and cargo planning, land and maritime transport, and mapping difficult terrain and areas affected by insecurity.
She proposed specialised subcommittees for airlift, land transport, maritime transport, storage and security where needed. The committee is also to prepare arrangements for high-risk locations and submit a report with recommendations and operational timelines.
INEC had earlier announced plans for the inauguration, as NaijaTrend reported here. The inauguration was attended by national commissioners and representatives of the Chief of Defence Staff and service chiefs.
