The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says it has uncovered more than 20 illegal stores involved in a suspected counterfeit drinks operation at the Lagos Trade Fair Complex.
The agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate raided Zamfara Plaza at the BBA Trade Fair Complex in Ojo on Tuesday, October 13. Two suspects were arrested over their alleged involvement in the operation.
NAFDAC said officers found people blending and counterfeiting popular alcoholic drinks, revalidating expired beverages for resale and stockpiling banned imported products. The operation was concealed in makeshift stores within the complex, the agency said.
Channels Television reported the agency’s estimate that products seized and evacuated were worth more than N2 billion.
Kunle Ojo, an assistant director in NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, said officers recovered drums, filters, packaging materials, a heating device and other equipment allegedly used in the production process, Vanguard reported.
Ojo said investigators would trace the sources of the products and raw materials, as well as those allegedly financing or directing the operation. Recovered goods would be taken to the agency’s warehouse for further action, including destruction under the applicable procedures.
He also urged residents to provide information about suspected counterfeit production facilities and said informants’ identities would be protected.
NAFDAC asked the public to report suspicious manufacturing, revalidation or sales activity through its complaints line, 0800-1-NAFDAC (0800-1-623322).
