Edo State police say a joint security team rescued an abducted man, Michael Akano, and killed three suspected kidnappers during an operation in Igarra, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.
The command said the rescue took place at about 2 a.m. on Sunday, October 11, in the Geo Works bushes and forest bordering Otuo. Akano had been abducted on October 9, according to police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem.
The team included officers from Igarra Division, troops from the Nigerian Army’s 195 Battalion, Department of State Services operatives, local hunters and members of the Edo State Security Corps.
Ikoedem said the team acted on intelligence and technical support. She said three suspected members of the gang were killed in a gun battle while others escaped with gunshot wounds.
Police said Akano was rescued unharmed and taken to a hospital for medical attention. The bodies of the three suspects were deposited at the General Hospital mortuary in Igarra for autopsy.
The command listed three locally fabricated single-barrel shotguns, eight live cartridges, five spent cartridges, two cutlasses and five mobile phones among items recovered.
Commissioner of Police Patrick Daaor commended the team’s response and coordination, according to the statement. Police said security operatives were continuing to search the surrounding bushes for the fleeing suspects and urged residents to provide timely information.
