The Federal Government has approved a higher budget for feeding National Youth Service Corps members during orientation, with implementation expected to begin next year, according to NYSC Director-General Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu.
Nafiu announced the adjustment while addressing 2026 Batch C Stream One corps members at the NYSC orientation camp in Obubra, Cross River State. Daily Post reported that he said the Budget Office had been informed of the increase.
The report did not specify the new allocation or the amount of the increase.
Beyond the feeding announcement, Nafiu urged corps members to manage their money carefully, avoid extravagant spending and develop savings habits. He encouraged them to acquire practical skills alongside their academic qualifications, citing cosmetology and hairstyling as examples.
He also advised corps members to avoid travelling after 6 p.m. and to resume their journeys the following day. He warned against sleeping in groups at filling stations or resting in public places, and advised them to seek military installations, police stations or Department of State Services offices and contact the NYSC hotline when needed.
Nafiu said efforts would be intensified to involve relevant groups in establishing and rehabilitating infrastructure at the Obubra camp.
Cross River State NYSC Coordinator Adejoke Oyenuga reported that 1,064 corps members had registered at the camp and had adapted to its structured environment.
