The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted N50 million bail to Arinze Nwogba, who is accused of impersonating the registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.

Nwogba must provide two sureties in the same amount and will remain at Kuje Correctional Centre until he meets the bail conditions. The court adjourned the case to October 19 for trial to begin.

Daily Post reported that Justice Salim Ibrahim gave the ruling on Thursday, saying the alleged offence was bailable and was not a capital offence.

One surety must be a federal civil servant on at least Grade Level 14. Both must live in the Federal Capital Territory, with one residing in Asokoro, Maitama or Guzape.

The sureties must submit affidavits of means and tax clearance certificates covering the last two years. Nwogba and the sureties must also provide photocopies of their National Identification slips. The judge directed the court registrar to verify the documents with the prosecution.

The Inspector-General of Police is prosecuting Nwogba on a six-count charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/612/2026. Police allege that he used the registrar’s photograph on WhatsApp and Truecaller to obtain financial advantage, an offence they say falls under the Cybercrimes Act, 2015, as amended in 2024.

According to the prosecution account reported by Daily Post, the registrar petitioned police about people using his identity to defraud members of the public. Investigators said they contacted the advertised WhatsApp number and were offered a contract purportedly approved by the education minister.
